Our April 18, 2024 webinar was "Cavitation Monitoring and Control" featuring Costas D. Arvanitis, Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
This session was moderated by Dr. Michael Gray from the University of Oxford.
About the Professors
Costas D. Arvanitis, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering
Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering
Georgia Institute of Technology
Dr. Arvanitis is a joint Associate Professor at the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University (2016-present). Dr. Arvanitis completed his doctoral studies at University College London at the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering in 2008. Subsequently, he did a two-year postdoctoral fellowship (2008-2009) at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. He then carried on with his research at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (2010-2016), where he reached the rank of Instructor. Dr. Arvanitis’ research integrates biomedical acoustics, quantitative imaging, mathematical modeling, and in vitro/in vivo experimentation to support the discovery and translation to the clinics of novel diagnostic and therapeutic interventions against human disease. Dr. Arvanitis and his team have conducted mechanistic investigations on ultrasound-meditated mass and drug transport in the brain and pioneered methods and technology for monitoring and controlling microbubble dynamics in complex media. His lab is also very active in the field of cancer research, where they have developed novel ultrasound-targeted cell and gene delivery strategies against brain tumors. Dr. Arvanitis has received several awards, including the Roberts Prize for the best article published in the journal of Physics in Medicine and Biology (2014) and the Pathway to Independence (2014) and MERIT (2020) Awards from the National Institute of Health (USA).

Dr. Michael Gray
Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford
Dr. Michael Gray is a Senior Researcher and Associate member of Faculty in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. Since arriving in 2015, Michael’s research has focused on three areas:
· Early phase clinical trials of ultrasound-mediated drug delivery for treatment of abdominal organ cancers,
· Clinical translation of quantitative cavitation monitoring techniques for non-invasive treatment guidance, and
· Development of devices to enable the use of sound, magnetism, and light for targeted drug delivery.
Prior to his time in Oxford, Michael was a research engineer and principal investigator at the Georgia Institute of Technology, working in areas including submarine sonar, cetacean soft tissue characterization, photoacoustics, fish hearing, and non-destructive structural evaluation.
